FAQ

What is a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan or Medigap policy?

A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan, also known as a Medigap policy helps pay the “gap” between Original Medicare (Medicare parts A and B) and what you pay out of pocket. Medicare supplement insurance policies are offered through private insurance companies.

How do I qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan?

You must have original Medicare (both parts A and B). Depending on when you enroll there may be additional health questions you must answer to determine your eligibility.

When can I enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan?

The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement/Medigap Insurance Plan is during your initial enrollment period.  Your initial enrollment consists of 6 month period that begins the first day of the month in which you turn 65 and are covered under Medicare Part B.  During this time you can enroll in any  Medicare Supplement/Medigap Insurance Plan sold in your state regardless of pre-existing health conditions.  In general you may enroll on a Medicare supplement insurance plan at any time of year as long as you are not enrolled on a Medicare Advantage plan.  Enrolling outside of your initial enrollment period may require you to answer underwriting questions.

Do Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans cover prescriptions?

No. You will need to purchase a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan. For more information on Part D Prescription Drug Plans please see the prescription drug plan section.
